To mark the occasion, we have a new podcast for you to listen to.

This podcast is by Lorna McKnight, our HR Manager for Northern & Scotland regions. Lorna goes into detail describing the origins, how it's celebrated and ways a business can embrace the theme.

Hi, my name is Lorna McKnight and I am the Regional HR Manager for Scotland and Northern Regions.

I have been asked to promote our topic of the month for March which is Women’s History Month. Today we will explore its origins, why it’s important, how it’s celebrated, and what workplaces can do to embrace it.

What is Women’s History Month?

Women’s History Month is an annual celebration in March that honours the contributions of women in history, culture, and society. It’s a time to reflect on the achievements of women who have paved the way for progress in fields like science, politics, art, and activism.

But beyond just recognising history, this month is about education and empowerment—ensuring that the next generation understands the vital role women have played in shaping our world.

So, how did Women’s History Month begin?

In the UK, it is closely tied to International Women’s Day, which has been celebrated on 8th March since the early 20th century. The idea of dedicating an entire month to women’s history gained traction, mirroring the movement in the United States. Over time, it became a recognised observance in the UK, celebrating the contributions of women across British history.

Each year, different organisations and institutions highlight a theme, focusing on specific areas such as women in STEM, politics, or the arts.

Across the UK, Women’s History Month is celebrated in many ways. Schools incorporate lessons on women’s achievements. Museums and libraries curate special exhibits. Social media platforms shine a spotlight on inspirational women.

Companies, charities, and communities hold events, from panel discussions to film screenings and fundraising initiatives for women-focused organisations. There are countless ways to honour and uplift women this month—and every month!

Women’s History Month is not just about reflection—it’s about action. Workplaces can celebrate and support women by hosting educational events, spotlighting female employees, and promoting mentorship programmes. Ensuring diversity in hiring, pay, and promotions, as well as partnering with women-led charities, also fosters inclusivity. Supporting women should not be just a one-month initiative it’s about fostering an inclusive and supportive environment all year-round.

Women’s History Month is not just about organisational efforts—it’s also about what we can do as individuals to support our colleagues. Here are some meaningful ways to uplift and empower women in the workplace:

· Amplify voices – Ensure women’s ideas are heard and credited in meetings.

· Be an ally – Challenge bias and advocate for inclusivity.

· Support growth – Mentor, sponsor, and recommend female colleagues for opportunities.

· Celebrate achievements – Recognise and appreciate contributions.

· Promote balance – Encourage flexible working and respect personal time.

Small actions can lead to big changes, creating a more inclusive and supportive workplace for everyone.

Women’s History Month is a time to honour the past, celebrate the present, and inspire the future. Whether through education, advocacy, or everyday actions, we all have a role in uplifting women’s voices and contributions.

Thank you for listening.
